Gaborone Dam

Gaborone Dam, on the Notwane river, provides the capital's water and serves as a marginal recreational site. However, it is beginning to be developed as a tourist venue. Surrounded by tall hills and edged with game filled woodlands Gaborone Dam is a very attractive place with great tourism potential.

On the northern bank near the Yacht Club ferry pier a swath of flatland has been earmarked for an entertainment development called "The Waterfront". This is an ambitious project whose development is currently being financed by revenue earned from outdoor music shows held at the site.

The Yacht Club itself commands a very attractive position overlooking the water on a rocky island in the middle of the dam, and is very popular with yachtsmen and guests alike who can enjoy the atmospheric open-air bar, swimming pool and the fine home-cooked Sunday lunches, not to mention the boat ride there (depending on the water level of the dam at the time).

On the southern bank the Kalahari Fishing Club has a clubhouse, but this is open to members only, although a new public facility called "City Scapes" was opened at the beginning of 2000. Although visitors still need a Water Utilities permit to enter the southern bank, City Scapes is an attractive grassed site set under umbrella thorn trees with picnic sites, a boat jetty, a well equipped children's playground and overnight ablution facilities.
